About Source Local
A community directory that connects neighbours with the farmers, bakers, fishers, and food makers in their area.
How this started
I kept hearing about amazing farms, bakers, and food makers in the area โ from friends, at the farmers market, in Facebook groups โ but there was never one place to actually find them all. You'd hear "oh there's a lady who sells honey just outside of town" and then spend an hour trying to track down a name, a phone number, anything.
I wanted something simple. Not a big marketplace with fees and accounts and checkouts. Just a directory โ here's who's out there, here's what they make, here's how to reach them. The kind of thing a neighbour would tell you.
We started in the Comox Valley because that's home. But every community has people growing, fishing, baking, and making incredible things โ and they all deserve to be easier to find.
What Source Local is (and isn't)
โ What it is
- A directory of farms, bakers, fishers, beekeepers, and all kinds of local food producers
- A way to discover who's making food near you
- A direct line between you and the producer โ no middleman
- Free for producers to list, free for everyone to browse
โ What it isn't
- A delivery service or online store
- A marketplace that takes a cut of your sales
- An app that requires sign-up or a subscription
- Run by the government or any institution
Why Source Local
Buy directly from the source
Whether it's a farm, a home baker, or a backyard fisher โ every dollar you spend goes straight to the person who made it.
Know exactly where your food comes from
Real people, real places. Browse producers in your area and know the story behind what's on your plate.
Fresher food, fewer kilometres
A loaf of bread baked this morning. Eggs picked up this weekend. Honey from three streets over. That's what local looks like.
Keep money in your community
Local spending circulates locally. When you buy from a neighbour, you're helping their family, their business, and your whole community.
Discover things you can't find in stores
Heritage tomatoes, wild-harvested mushrooms, fermented goods, specialty cuts โ local producers offer variety that supermarkets never will.
Build real relationships
When you know your farmer, your baker, your cheesemaker โ food stops being a transaction and starts being a connection.
What we believe
Direct beats middleman.
No platform fees, no commission, no algorithm deciding who gets seen. Just you and the person who grew, caught, or made your food.
Neighbours beat strangers.
There's something different about buying eggs from someone you wave to at the market, or bread from a baker who knows your name. That's what we're trying to make easier.
Every community has this.
Every town, every region has people growing and making incredible things. They just need to be easier to find. That's what Source Local is for.
Simple beats complicated.
No accounts to create, no checkout flows, no subscriptions. Browse a producer, reach out, pick up. That's the whole thing.
How It Works
Browse farms, bakers, fishers, and food producers near you
Tap a listing and reach out directly โ by phone, email, or however they prefer
Arrange a pickup, farm visit, or local drop-off that works for both of you
Tell a friend โ the best way to grow this is word of mouth
